The Curtin Central Bus Station project is a key component of the overall Greater Curtin Masterplan and formed part of the phase 1 delivery of the masterplan known as the Stage 1 Greater Curtin Innovation Precinct. The interchange is intended to provide a principal public transport hub within Greater Curtin, collocated adjacent a future a light rail service. As set out in the Curtin Masterplan, a key intention of the bus station is that it establishes “a northern gateway, framing Main Street and catalysing large and small format retail and office space”.
The bus station plays a major role in introducing increased public volume into the precinct to support the envisioned 52 week commercial / retail economy of the surrounding services and amenities. The facility aims to encourage an increased uptake of public transport and maximise bus throughput and subsequent pedestrian traffic. It is projected that the bus station will accommodate approximately 130 bus services in the peak hour and in excess of 20,000 daily visitors when at full capacity
The goal of Curtin University as outlined in the Greater Curtin master plan is to transform the current University from an isolated suburban campus into a major node of activity. The master plan provides a vision, supporting frameworks and design direction to guide the transformation of Curtin University’s Bentley campus into a vibrant and diverse community, a ‘Greater Curtin’ over the next 20 years. The bus interchange project is a key component of the masterplan that helps Curtin achieve this goal.
The innovative Curtin Central Bus Station project involves integrating the bus station into the urban fabric of the Greater Curtin North neighborhood, one of Greater Curtin’s three distinct neighborhoods. The new bus station establishes a northern gateway, framing Main Street and catalysing large and small format retail and office space. It also supports new adjacent significant student residential facilities which are also being provided that in turn assist in consolidating activity in Greater Curtin North and further supporting retail development. The station will be fundamental to supporting activity within the area which will be a key commercial hub within Greater Curtin and a place where the community come to get day-to-day needs as well as meet and play into the evening.
