West Coast Drive

A priority with this project was to maximise the ocean aspect to each of the three townhouses whilst providing an acceptable level of privacy to the inhabitants. This was made more difficult with an adjacent shopping centre car park and planning constraints. The design solution provided driveway access along the long northern boundary which maximised northern solar penetration and ocean views. Uninterrupted views are also achieved to the most rear townhouse by limiting the height of the houses forward of it. The townhouses 'turn their backs' on the shopping centre car park with minimal openings here.

Aesthetically the design intent was to provide a casual but sophisticated and practical seaside solution. This translated into a restrained colour and material palette and large expanses of glazed areas to allow views to the ocean and to enjoy the changing scenery of pedestrians passing the site.
